Questions & Answers

What is the difference between a straight-through serial cable and a null modem serial cable?
A straight-through serial cable connects a DTE device to a DCE device, while a null modem serial cable connects two DTE devices directly. Explanation: A straight-through serial cable is used to connect a Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) device, such as a computer, to a Data Communications Equipment (DCE) device, such as a modem. In a straight-through cable, the pinout on both connectors is identical. A null modem serial cable, also known as a crossover serial cable, is used to connect two DTE devices without a DCE device. To enable direct communication, the transmit (TXD) and receive (RXD) pins are crossed between the connectors. To determine which serial cable type is required, refer to the device manufacturer’s documentation for compatibility requirements.
