Questions & Answers

Can a SAS drive be converted to SATA using this mobile rack?
No, a mobile rack cannot fully convert a SAS drive to SATA operation. A SAS drive connected through a mobile rack still requires a SAS-compatible controller to function correctly. Explanation: Some mobile racks allow a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drive to physically connect using a standard Serial ATA (SATA) connector interface. However, physical connector compatibility does not convert the SAS drive protocol into SATA. To use a SAS drive successfully, the host storage controller must support SAS devices. Key compatibility rules include: SAS controllers support both SAS drives and SATA drives. Most SATA controllers support only SATA drives and do not support SAS drives. A mobile rack does not convert SAS signaling into SATA signaling. As a result, installing a SAS drive into a mobile rack with SATA-style connectors will only work if the connected system or controller includes SAS support. For more information about SAS and SATA interoperability, refer to the related FAQ: http://www.startech.com/faq/hard_drive_controllers_sas_drive_compatibility .
