Static weight capacity refers to the maximum weight a server rack can safely support when it is stationary and properly installed. This is typically higher because the load is evenly distributed and does not shift. Dynamic weight capacity refers to the maximum weight the rack can support while being moved, such as when using casters. This limit is lower because movement introduces forces such as vibration, momentum, and uneven load distribution. When a rack is in motion, these additional forces can increase stress on the frame, mounting points, and casters. Exceeding the dynamic weight rating may result in equipment damage, rack instability, or caster failure. To ensure safe operation, always verify both static and dynamic weight ratings in the product specifications and reduce the load accordingly before moving a populated server rack.

Is it safe or recommended to move a server rack while it is loaded with equipment?
No, it’s generally neither safe nor recommended to move a rack while it is loaded with equipment. Because of the weight and height of server racks, they have a high centre of gravity and can pose a tipping hazard, especially in the case of taller racks or heavier loads. This creates a risk of serious injury to people and damage to the rack, mounted equipment, and/or flooring. The casters are designed only for minor positioning adjustments within the rack’s final location, not for moving the rack between rooms, across uneven surfaces, or on ramps/slopes. If you must move a server rack, we recommend unloading it first, as we do not support or endorse moving it while loaded.
